Expansion of Federal Tax Credits for Home Improvements

For 2009 and 2010, Congress has authorized an increase in the tax credit for qualified energy-efficient equipment or building components installed in the taxpayer's principal residence. The overall credit is tripled from 10% to 30% of qualifying expenditures, subject to a lifetime cap of $1,500 (formerly $500).

Some of the most common energy-efficient improvements are: windows, skylights and exterior doors, certain types of roofs, insulation, new heating and air conditioning units, water heaters and solar energy systems.

A complete list of qualifying improvements can be found at the Energy Star website.
