To
participate, companies who were nominated were asked to have their employees
fill out an anonymous survey evaluating their workplace. An independent
research firm then evaluated the results based on corporate culture, job
satisfaction, workplace trust, respect, pride, camaraderie, compensation,
fairness, communication, training and customer satisfaction. From there
they chose the top 101 companies.
"Trust was one of the strongest themes running throughout the nominations," says Kimberly Sweet, editor of Professional Remodeler magazine. "Employees wrote of their supervisor's respect for their judgment, believing in the president's vision, being proud of their employer's reputation among clients. "All of these boil down to trust. When we surveyed the employees of the remodeling firms that made our cut, we found that trust mattered even more than compensation or training." Sweet adds that as the residential construction industry continues to struggle to find, hire and keep good labor, it's imperative that remodelers analyze not just what potential hires bring to the table but also what their companies offer employees. "Even though it's a tight job market we remain very selective about our employees," says president Paul Winans. "Integrity, follow-though and reliability is what we provide our clients. In our experience only very special people can deliver that day after day, and our staff can be trusted with that task." A recipient of numerous local and national awards, Winans Construction is a 24-year old firm specializing in residential remodeling in the East Bay. Co-owners Paul and Nina Winans are both National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) Certified Remodelers. Paul has given many seminars to homeowners over the past several years and writes the From the Ground Up column on construction for Hills Publications.
